When we think of God do we think of some gigantic creature somewhere in the cloud that is in charge of the world and makes us do His every command? Ok that's a little dramatic. When you think of God, do you envision an aged grey man in sparkling white clothes, too holy to approach? Okay, maybe that's not you. Let me see if I can cover your perspective. When you envision God do you see Him as this guy with unrealistic rules, regulations and expectations? How we see God matters; it determines how we approach Him.
This post today is not about your perspective. I want to establish one thing today and this is it: no matter what picture or vision the thought of God evokes in your mind, God is approachable.
How do I say this is the most basic way? God can be your friend, if you so desire. He is not some being that waits to spank you when you go against any of His rules. No! He is a loving father, friend and companion. He is love personified.
I could go on and on about God, but I know some of you have questions on your mind, one of which is ‘If God is approachable how do I approach Him?’
I used to think there was this long list of rules I had to keep in order to have access to God, but boy was I wrong. I realized it’s quite simple to hook up with God; really simple. Let me share my goldmine with you. Here it is:
The man who approaches God must have faith in two things, first that God exists and secondly that it is worth a man’s while to try to find God. Hebrews 11:6 (PHILLIPS)
Two simple rules? And they really are not rules! Okay, so here are the two things:
I MUST BELIEVE THAT GOD EXISTS: This is relatively easy because you wouldn’t want a relationship with someone who didn’t exist. That would be weird. I think this one takes care of itself. There is no doubt that God exists, believe me, I know. So, step one requires you accept that the one with whom you are seeking relationship with exists.
I MUST BELIEVE THAT GOD REWARDS ME FOR SEEKING HIM: To elaborate this let’s look at another version of the text. “…He is the rewarder of those who earnestly and diligently seek Him [out].” (Hebrews 11:6, AMP). This gets better. God actually rewards me for seeking a relationship with Him? Now that rules out any other option.
If it’s this simple to hook up with the Almighty God, why do we make seem so hard. Yes, it is a disciplined life once you decide to change the course of your life, but a little discipline never killed anyone. So from me to you, hook up with this loving father and enjoy all the immeasurable benefits and rewards of doing so.
